We all want to maintain our youthful looks for as long as possible. However, there are many things that we do or don’t do in our daily lives that can cause premature aging. Here are some anti-aging tips that will help you look your best now and then:

5 Anti-aging tipsThe sun is the main culprit when it comes to premature aging. Wear a broad spectrum sunscreen and a hat, even on cloudy days. You need to wear sunscreen even in the winter if you are to be in open spaces. UVA rays don’t cause sunburn, however they penetrate deep into the skin damaging the collagen fibres. As we age, our skin decreases its ability to repair damaged collagen leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. 
The sun also robs the skin of much needed moisture, causing dryness and flaking. Dry skin looks dull and looses its plumpness.
Another damaging effect of the sun is pigmentation. Our skin tries to protect itself from the onslaught of the UV rays by creating clusters of melanin. In our younger years these pigment clusters are often in the deep layers of the skin. As time passes and our skin gets thinner they come to the surface as liver spots, brown spots and red spots.

2. Don’t Smoke:

Besides nicotine, cigarettes contain: carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, tar and DDT. Many of these substances are used to kill insects and small pests, imagine what they are doing to your skin. The toxins in cigarette smoke kill your skin cells leading to dryness, loss of elasticity, wrinkles and mouth lines.
To make it even worse, the constant pouting also helps create wrinkles around the mouth.

3. Watch out for repetitive gestures:

Frown lines caused by repetitive gesturesFrowning, squinting and uneven mouth movements or pouting will cause deep lines. If you know you frown often, then try to stop yourself from doing it. Recruit the help of family and friends to help you become aware of the bad habit. As a last resource and before it is too late I would recommend some Botox injections. Botox will relax your muscles preventing the movement. After a few months your muscles will have habituated to the relaxed state and won’t be causing you any more trouble. If you are able to stop the bad habit on time your skin will have a chance to recuperate and you would have successfully prevented deep lines.
Another common habit that can lead to wrinkles is drinking from a bottle. Water bottles are ever so popular these days with most people taking a sip or two every few minutes. This constant pouting will cause mouth lines. If you are sitting at your desk, pour the water into a cup and drink from the cup instead.

4. Keep your skin well hydrated:

Our skin needs water to be able to keep plump and elastic.
  • Drink enough water every day.
  • Avoid dehydrating beverages like coffee, alcohol and soft drinks. 
  • Moisturise your skin morning and evening. Even if you have oily skin, washing your face with a gentle cleanser and moisturising will balance your PH reducing oil production and keeping your skin healthy
